My exhibition was titled, “Believing in Nature.”
About the exhibition and this series of photographs
Over a series of Sundays, I photographed African Christian Zionists gathering in open fields to connect with their spiritual truths. From 10 am to 3 pm, they come together and perform their rituals.
Their initial response to my camera was suspicion, and I faced a lot of rejection. The groups that did welcome me allowed only 10 to 20 minutes of photography, which is very little time for social documentary work. This series is the result of showing up, again and again, and earning that trust.
