I started losing my hair in my early 20’s and started  shaving my head just before my 30’s- over 20 years ago. I think I can honestly say that I started the trend of voluntarily  shaving heads to which the likes of Bruce Willis owe me a debt of gratitude. ;).

Due to my lack of goldilocks I am fascinated with interesting hairstyles not out of jealousy of course but I do think it is a medium for displaying creativity.

I’ve just bought a new Fuji XT3. With my recently purchased enthusiasm, a new vision, and my interest for hairstyles I’ve embarked on capturing Cool Hairstyles in Africa. This isn’t a studio project but rather an outdoor experience.

With a project like this there is a couple of challenges;

  1. Getting complete strangers to allow me to photograph them.
  2. A hairstyle is only on one part of the body, and not wanting to shoot front, top and sides separately, there’s not much room to get really creative while shooting just a head of hair.

    Lindiwe from Lusaka Zambia – She loves meeting new people and talking to them.
  3. As I’ve had no hair for so long, I miss it so much so I have to contain myself to not continuously ask them if I could stroke their hair – yup, this could make me seem like a weirdo. (Just kidding, I have no such fetishes – I say while rubbing my head ;))

Tinted Blue glasses – He was getting married that day at 3pm

The first phase of my project has begun and I’ve met so many people from, South Africa, Zimabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique, The DRC and Malawi.

As this is just the beginning there are only a few pictures exhibited, more will be shown via my instagram account and in the portraits section of this site.

Thanks for reading…
